Still Learning, Still Snapping – Why Even After Years Behind the Lens, I’m Still Taking Notes
Hello! I’m Lukas, your friendly neighbourhood wedding photographer from the beautiful, windswept corners of North Yorkshire. I run a little company you might’ve heard of (or will hopefully hear lots more about soon) called Smooth Pictures. Now, I’ve been photographing weddings for quite a few years – long enough to have mastered the art of pinning a boutonnière with one hand while adjusting the ISO with the other.
But here’s a little confession: I’ve just been back in class. That’s right. I swapped the wedding aisle for the learning aisle (okay, there wasn’t an actual aisle – it was more of a workshop room – but you get the idea).
Why Would a Seasoned Pro Go Back to School?
Because, dear reader, photography – especially wedding photography – is like a good marriage: if you stop putting in the effort, things can get stale. And nobody wants stale wedding photos. I mean, you want timeless, not time-warped.
I recently attended an absolutely brilliant course run by none other than the legend himself – Chris Chambers. If you’ve never heard of Chris, he’s basically the David Attenborough of wedding photography, but with a camera instead of binoculars. This man knows light like a cat knows how to find the warmest spot in the house. He’s one of the best in the UK, and learning from him is like being handed the Holy Grail of camera knowledge... except it’s made of glass and probably costs an arm and a leg to insure.
So, What Did I Learn?
Oh, where to begin! Let’s just say this wasn’t your standard "point and shoot" class. We covered everything from advanced lighting techniques that make a couple look like they’re stepping straight out of a Hollywood rom-com, to posing tips that make even the most camera-shy groom look like James Bond (shaken, not blurry).
There were new tricks for composition, clever ways to work with the weather (yes, even our weather – hello sideways rain), and techniques for capturing those spontaneous little moments that make a wedding album so much more than a checklist of staged smiles.
And perhaps most importantly – it was inspiring. There’s something deeply energising about being surrounded by other creative souls, all as geeky about gear and giddy about golden hour as I am.
Why This Matters (To You!)
Now, you might be wondering: "Lukas, that’s great for you, but how does this benefit me and my wedding?"
I’m glad you asked.
The truth is, every course I take, every new skill I sharpen, every creative risk I try out – it all filters directly into my work at Smooth Pictures. And that means better photos for you.
Better lighting = you looking your absolute best, no matter what the sky is doing. Better composition = images that actually tell your story, not just fill a frame. Better creativity = unique, beautiful memories captured in a way that’s unmistakably you.
Plus, let’s be honest – you don’t want a photographer who thinks they already know everything. You want someone curious, excited, and constantly levelling up their game. You want someone who’s just as invested in your big day as you are.
The Bottom Line?
Even after years of shooting weddings across Yorkshire and beyond, I’m still learning, growing, evolving – not because I have to, but because I want to. Because every couple deserves a photographer who brings passion to the party (and who also knows how to blend into the background when Uncle Tony hits the dance floor).
So, here’s to never settling, to chasing better light, and to always striving to make every single wedding I shoot a little bit more magical than the last.
If you’re getting married and want someone who brings a whole lot of experience, a sprinkle of humour, and a camera full of fresh ideas, give me a shout.
Watch This Space – The Best Is Yet to Come
This journey is only just beginning, and I’ve never felt more excited about what’s ahead. Whether you’re a couple looking for someone to capture your big day, a fellow creative, or a long-time supporter – thank you. Your belief in me and in Smooth Pictures is what drives me to keep pushing, learning, and striving for excellence.
So, keep your eyes peeled. Big things are happening. New ideas are brewing. And trust me – you won’t want to miss what’s coming next.
Here’s to growth, to love, and to telling stories that last a lifetime. 🖤
Let’s make some Smooth Pictures together.
Cheers, Lukas
